Helicobacter pylori is a tiny bacteria that live under the lining of the stomach. The groups most commonly affected are:

- Seniors

- The inhabitants of developing countries.

Who actually carry this bacteria in the stomach have been infected, most probably in childhood. The risk of acquiring infection as an adult is more discreet, less than 1% per year. Typically, the Helicobacter pylori itself produces no symptoms ulcer. However, this bacterium is the most common cause of stomach and duodenum. The bacteria can also play a role in the development of stomach cancer.

Helicobacter pylori infection can be treated by using antibiotics. This eliminates the infection and heal the ulcer in about 80% of cases. If the bacteria could not be removed, the ulcer reappears after a short period of time in most people.

How can detect infection with Helicobacter pylori?

This is done by weighing the microscope and allows the existence of the bacteria, inflammation and tissue lesions. Gastric mucosa can be cultured from biopsies obtained and through a reagent (urease test) can confirm the presence of the bacteria.

“Breath test”

The expired air can be analyzed, after inhalation of a small amount of radioactively labeled urea (in crystalline form). Depending on the urea detected in exhaled air can be estimated whether or not the bacteria in the stomach.

Blood sample

If you have or have had H. pylori infection can be detected by the presence of specific antibodies in the blood (proteins made by the body against bacteria).

Stool sample

This technique is not yet perfected. This method investigates the existence of DNA (genetic load) of the bacteria in a stool sample.
